9 months!

Here we are 9 months!!!!
30 days shy of DOUBLE DIGITS!!!
I want to cry thinking about how my baby girl is getting so big, and turning into her own little person! Every week there is some sort of new development or milestone!I just think about how a year ago at this time I was gettting BIG! had my first baby shower and its CRAZY for me to see how fast time really goes by!

Halloween 2009!
Baby shower November 1st 2009!
This last month has been really hard, Pella had the flu for a week, and I was sick, and something I am not ashamed to talk about is Occupational Therapy. For those of you who don't know what that is heres a definition; "therapy based on engagement in meaningful activities of daily life, especially to enable or encourage participation in such activities in spite of impairments or limitations in physical or mental functions"
For months I have been very observant of Pella's development because of how small she is and certain concerns her Dr. has had. At her 8 month check up there Pella was sitting on the table waiting to be poked at and pricked with a needle. Twirling her hands and squealing away!
Little did I know that the "hand twirling" she does all day would raise a red flag with her Dr.
"AUTISM!" Thats a word NO PARENT ever wants to hear, my heart sank, I felt sick, I immediately started thinking about what "I" could have done to cause it, or what "I" could have done to prevent it. However, I know my daughter better then anyone, and AUTISTIC?
NO. Pella had no other characteristics of Autism, I understand its a broad spectrum, but it just didn't make sense to me. So with that said, I took on finding an occupational therapist to evaluate her, and also assess her for her NO CRAWLING, weak upper body, and the "hand twirling"
This last Sunday, I had the OTT here for 3 hours! evaluated and assessed Pella.
I got GREAT news. No signs or red flags of Autism, however she does have have a few "gross motor delays" for those of you who dont know what "Gross Motor Skills" are definition; "Gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body that enable such functions as walking, kicking, sitting upright, lifting, and throwing a ball. A person's gross motor skills depend on both muscle tone and strength. Low muscle tone, or hypotonia, is a characteristic of several disabling conditions such as Down syndrome, genetic or muscle disorders, or central nervous system disorders." The therapy for this requires ALOT of tummy time and A PISSED off Pella, but its whats best!
The hand twirling is normal, but what makes Pella's more of an issue is because she DOES NOT want her hands to be touched. she pulls them away if you go to grab her hands, and thats not normal, so I'm having to do pressure therapy with her hands to get her used to pressure and force on her hands, Im told that along with this kind of therapy and once she begins to crawl it should subside as her hands will be adapted to force and pressure when crawling around
Its not easy to accept that my child is behind in certain developments when all the other developments shes THRIVING. But it happens, and its something I cant control, but I made the choice to do something about it now, versus not do anything about it and it be harder to fix.
I look forward to working with our OTT and watching Pella defeat these little bumps in the road!
We are also seeing a Gastroenterologist to do a enzyme deficiency test, and discuss switching her to Goats Milk instead of Formula for her constipation issues.
The joys of MOTHERHOOD!

and good for you, mama, for being your daughter's advocate and taking charge of her health & wellbeing! i would imagine it would be tough to "admit" your child is having some delays, but what you're describing is minor and i'd be willing to bet she'll overcome it in a snap with you by her side, helping her to grow. you're a great mom! and pella is obviously a smart, thriving little kiddo - the OT will be fantastic for her and she may even reach other milestones faster because of it! great work. love this post.
